‘Ultimate Introvert’ to the ‘Touchy-Chummy’: Using Simulations to Teach Interviewing Skills

In-depth interviews represent one of the most commons forms qualitative data used in social science research, especially ethnography. Yet preparing students to conduct good in-depth is an area relative neglect literature, despite potential marketability this skill for anthropology and sociology students. Practice communities may be impractical and/or problematic because wariness due historical legacies, as well current political economic uncertainty. However, relying on peer-interactions “mock” students’ collective inexperience. Without sufficient preparation, mistakes can costly all. In paper, we advocate use a simulated interview participant (SIP) better prepare interviewers. We provide 12 SIPs guidance implementing them classrooms. Through SIPs, instructors or other actors expose common interviewer pitfalls research diverse communities.
